What makes this especially relevant for exam preparation is the timing effect. Re-reading can look competitive with active recall on a test taken immediately afterward. The real difference shows up later, which is exactly when it counts, since most exams happen weeks or months after the material was first covered, not the same afternoon.

Why Retrieval Works and Re-Reading Doesn't

The mechanism isn't mysterious. Every time you successfully retrieve a fact or explain a concept from memory, you strengthen the specific mental pathway that let you find it. Re-reading the same material doesn't create that same retrieval event, because you never actually had to search for anything. The information was simply presented to you again.

There's a second, quieter benefit to active recall that re-reading can't offer: it exposes gaps immediately. If you can't answer a practice question or explain a concept without your notes, you find out right then, while there's still time to fix it.
