NELFUND Student Loan Scheme is Voluntary, Not Compulsory for Nigerian Students

NELFUND Student Loan Scheme is Voluntary, Not Compulsory for Nigerian Students

The NELFUND student loan scheme is voluntary, not compulsory for students in Nigerian tertiary institutions, according to the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND). The fund clarified that students who can afford their educational expenses without borrowing are not required to apply for the interest-free loan.

NELFUND explained that the scheme is intended to help eligible students who face financial difficulties meeting the cost of their education. It is designed to reduce financial barriers to higher education, not to make borrowing mandatory for every student.

NELFUND Student Loans Are Optional

According to NELFUND, students should apply for the loan only when they need financial assistance to continue their education.

Students who can pay their tuition and other educational expenses without financial support do not have to borrow. Those who need assistance can consider applying after assessing their financial circumstances and understanding the applicable loan conditions.

The fund also warned that making the loan compulsory for all students, regardless of their financial situation, would contradict the purpose of the scheme.

Who Should Apply for a NELFUND Student Loan?

The NELFUND student loan scheme is intended to support eligible Nigerian students who may struggle to finance their education.

Students who are considering applying should assess whether they need financial assistance to continue their studies.

Before applying, prospective beneficiaries should:

  • Assess their educational expenses and financial needs.

  • Confirm that they meet the applicable eligibility requirements.

  • Review the loan terms and conditions.

  • Understand their repayment obligations before accepting the loan.

Students who can comfortably finance their education without borrowing are not required to apply.

NELFUND Loans Are Interest-Free but Must Be Repaid

Although NELFUND student loans are interest-free, beneficiaries are still subject to repayment obligations under the Student Loans Act.

This means that students should not treat the loan as a grant or scholarship. While the scheme provides financial assistance for education, recipients are expected to comply with the applicable repayment requirements.

NELFUND has therefore encouraged prospective applicants to understand the conditions attached to the loan before accepting financial support.

NELFUND Urges Institutions to Guide Students

In its clarification, NELFUND called on tertiary institutions, student leaders and other stakeholders to provide accurate information about the student loan scheme.

The fund emphasised the importance of helping students understand the purpose of the programme and guiding those who genuinely need financial assistance.

The clarification was issued through Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, NELFUND's Director of Strategic Communications.

What Nigerian Students Should Know About NELFUND Loans

The key points from NELFUND's clarification are:

  • Applying for a student loan is voluntary.

  • Students who can afford their education without borrowing do not have to apply.

  • The scheme is intended to assist eligible students facing financial difficulties.

  • The loans are interest-free.

  • Beneficiaries must still meet their repayment obligations.

  • Students should understand the loan terms before accepting financial assistance.

NELFUND has clarified that its student loan scheme is an option for eligible students who need financial assistance, not a compulsory requirement for everyone attending a Nigerian tertiary institution.

Students should assess their financial needs, confirm their eligibility and understand the repayment conditions before applying. Those who can fund their education without borrowing are free to continue doing so without taking a NELFUND loan.
